Dr. Jan Haizmann is a qualified lawyer graduating in Germany, UK, and Belgium. Dr. Haizmann started his career at a German law firm, specializing on European competition law and industry regulation in telecoms and energy. In 1999, Dr. Haizmann moved to London and there, he started working as regulatory affairs manager at Enron Europe and TXU Europe focusing on industry regulation applicable to the power and gas trading sector – he was in charge of competition and antitrust matters for the European region. Both companies stopped their operations. Subsequent to their demise, Mr. Haizmann gained commercial experience as gas origination manager (trader) at the front desk of Glencore Energy in London from 2002 to 2005.
Since 2005, Dr. Haizmann has been an independent consultant in the energy trading industry. He is currently based in Brussels, advising clients on legal and regulatory aspects of energy trading. Dr. Haizmann has been appointed expert in several arbitration proceedings helping dispute resolution in complex gas and power transactions. He has been managing gas business set ups for existing and new energy trading locations as external adviser.
As of 2010, the advisory activities have focused inter alia on regulation applicable to wholesale energy trading both for physically settled and financially settled trades.
In 2017, Dr Haizmann conceptually invented CorreggioNET, which is an interactive compliance platform for physical power and gas trading participants. CorreggioNET enables counterparties to monitor and follow regulatory change applicable to physical trading business in 20+ countries. The CorreggioNET service is subscribed by multiple trading companies as regulatory monitoring and compliance tool.
Since 2015, the European Union has entrusted Dr. Haizmann with technical assistance project management in the field of conceptually preparing gas trading and gas exchange building in Turkey (2015/16) and advice on how to enable commodity markets in Ukraine (in 2017 and 2019).
In parallel to his consulting activities, Mr. Haizmann is holding different executive functions within the European Federation of Energy Traders (EFET). He has been a member of the EFET Board of Directors since 2009 and has managed the Legal Committee since 2005. Furthermore, Mr. Haizmann is a member of the exchange council of the European Energy (EEX) and engages in various educational (training) activities within corporate and academic world. In 2020, Resource (a platform sponsored by Solar Power Europe and Windpower Europe)and this platform appointed Dr Haizmann to chair the standardisation of PPA contracts and to work out best practices in direct project finance and in industry initiatives enabling the uptake of RES generation.
Dr Haizmann attended and graduated with honours at the universities in Freiburg (Ass. Iur.), London (Master of Laws – Commercial and Corporate aw, LL.M) and Brussels (PhD). He was admitted to the German Bar in 1994. He has been living with his family in Belgium since 2005 and is fluent in German, English, French and Dutch.
